This easy Pork and Peas Stew is a comforting, one-pot dinner made with tender pork, sweet green peas, tomatoes, and dill. The ingredients simmer together in a light, flavorful sauce that's perfect for serving with crusty bread. It's a simple, satisfying meal that doesn't require much preparation or a long list of ingredients.

Ingredients and Substitutions
You only need a handful of everyday ingredients to make this stew. Here are a few things to consider when choosing them.
- Pork: Boneless pork loin is a good choice for a quicker meal because it cooks relatively fast. Pork shoulder also works, but it needs a longer cooking time to become tender.
- Onion: Yellow onion or white onion would be perfect.
- Green peas: Fresh or frozen peas work equally well. Frozen peas are convenient because you can add them directly to the pot without thawing.
- Tomatoes: A 14.5-ounce can of diced tomatoes adds flavor and creates a nice sauce. You can also use a medium fresh tomato, especially in the summer when you have access to juicy, good tomatoes.
- Tomato paste: A small amount gives the sauce a richer tomato flavor.
- Dill: Fresh dill adds a bright, herby flavor that complements the peas and pork. Dried dill works too, if that's what you have available.
- You'll also need olive oil, salt, and a little water.
How to Make Pork and Peas Stew
This stew comes together in one pot with very little hands-on work.
1. Brown the pork. Cut the pork into bite-sized cubes. Heat the olive oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the pork and cook for about 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned.
2. Add the onion and peas. Stir in the diced onion and cook for 3–4 minutes, until softened. Add the fresh or frozen peas and cook for another 2–3 minutes, stirring to combine everything.

3. Add the tomatoes and seasonings. Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, and ½ cup water. Mix everything well. The liquid should come partway up the ingredients, creating a sauce without completely covering the peas.

4. Simmer until tender. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat. Partially cover the pan and cook for approximately 15–20 minutes, checking earlier if the pork pieces are small. The peas should be tender and the pork cooked through.

5. Finish with dill. Stir in the chopped fresh dill or dried dill. Taste, adjust the seasoning if necessary, and remove from the heat.

Tips for the Best Pork and Peas Stew
- Choose the right pork cut. Pork loin is lean and cooks quickly, so avoid simmering it longer than necessary. If you prefer pork shoulder, brown it with the onion, then add the tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, and water. Simmer gently for approximately 60–90 minutes, or until nearly fork-tender, before adding the peas. Continue cooking until both the meat and peas are tender.
- Adjust the water as needed. Start with ½ cup, especially when using canned tomatoes with their juices. Add more only if the stew looks dry. You want enough sauce for dipping bread, but the ingredients shouldn't be swimming in liquid.
- Keep the heat low. Once the sauce starts simmering, reduce the heat. A gentle simmer helps the pork cook evenly and keeps the sauce from reducing too quickly.
- Check the peas before serving. Frozen peas generally soften faster than fresh ones. If using fresh peas, especially larger or more mature ones, allow a little extra cooking time.

What to Serve with Pork and Peas Stew
Crusty bread is an excellent choice for soaking up the tomato sauce. You can also serve the stew with a side of polenta or even with a sunny-side-up egg. Since the stew already contains meat and vegetables, it also works well as a complete meal on its own.

How to Store and Reheat
Refrigerator: Allow the stew to cool slightly, then transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate promptly. It will keep for 3–4 days.
Freezer: Freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 2–3 months for best quality. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Reheating: Warm the stew in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated thoroughly. Add a splash of water if the sauce has thickened during storage.

Pork and Peas Stew
Ingredients
- 1 pound boneless pork loin cut into bite-sized cubes (pork shoulder can also be used; see notes)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium white onion diced
- 1 pound green peas fresh or frozen
- 14.5 can diced tomatoes, with juices or 1 medium fresh tomato, diced
- 1 teaspoon tomato paste
- ½ cup water plus more as needed
- 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried dill
Instructions
- Cut the pork into bite-sized cubes, about ¾ to 1 inch.
- Heat the olive oil in a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the pork and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned on all sides.
- Add the diced onion to the pan and cook for 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent.
- Stir in the fresh or frozen peas and cook for 2–3 minutes, mixing them with the pork and onion. There is no need to thaw frozen peas.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes with their juices, tomato paste, salt, and ½ cup water. Mix well. Add a little more water if needed to create a sauce around the ingredients. The peas do not need to be completely submerged.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low, partially cover, and cook for approximately 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peas are tender and the pork is cooked through. Add a splash of water if the sauce reduces too much.
- Stir in the fresh or dried dill. Taste and adjust the salt if necessary.
- Remove from the heat and serve hot with crusty bread for dipping into the tomato sauce.
